Cookouts, Keepsakes & Canine Fun Summer unofficially starts now, and things are getting busy at TownHouse. As Memorial Day weekend approaches, weâre looking forward to sunny days, extra playtime, cozy cat naps, and plenty of tail wags from our vacationing guests. If your pet is joining us for the holiday, nowâs the time to finalize plans! Memorial Day is a peak travel week, and boarding reservations require a 2-night minimum stay. An additional $5 holiday rate per dog, per night will apply from May 22 through May 31. Daycare reservations should also be booked in advance during this busy stretch, though weâll always do our best to accommodate everyone. We expect a full house for the long weekend, and we canât wait to celebrate the unofficial start of summer with our favorite dogs and cats. BBQ Season Has Entered the Chat Memorial Day weekend usually means cookouts, snacks, and plenty of tempting smells drifting through the yard. While itâs hard to resist those puppy eyes, not every BBQ favorite is safe for dogs.
A few dog-friendly options include plain hamburgers, grilled chicken without seasoning, carrots, watermelon (seedless), blueberries, and small bites of hot dog in moderation. Fresh water and frozen treats are also great ways to help pups stay cool during warm-weather gatherings.
Foods to avoid include onions, corn cobs, grapes, chocolate, heavily seasoned meats, alcohol, and anything with xylitol. And while bones might seem like a backyard classic, cooked bones can splinter and become dangerous very quickly. The good news is that dogs donât need a full plate to feel included. A safe treat, a shady spot, and being close to their favorite people is usually more than enough.

Does your pup walk politely on leash⊠until literally anything exciting happens? This week, weâre going back to basics with leash skills, focusing on calm walking, staying close, and paying attention to their handler instead of every distraction along the way. Itâs perfect for dogs who never fully learned leash manners or just need a refresher after a few too many âIâll walk youâ moments. This is a one-on-one 15-minute session, but if there's something your dog needs to work on, please let us know, and we can easily incorporate it into your pup's regular daycare or boarding stay. We'll also have our Woofle (doggy waffle) add-on available.
May 27th Pups will dip their paws in paint to create colorful flower blooms on canvas, complete with stems and leaves for a sweet spring keepsake for Crafty Canine Day. This activity encourages calm behavior and confidence during handling while creating a lasting memory.May 28th For Agility Exercise Enrichment, we'll set up a challenging agility course for the pups to help build coordination, confidence, and body awareness through structured activity.May 29th Strike! June is Dog Licensing Month! Each June, dog owners across Connecticut take a moment to renew their pupâs license. Itâs a simple way to help keep pets safe and healthy. Licensing ensures your dog is up to date on rabies vaccinations and makes it easier to reunite if they ever get lost.
Places like TownHouse are also required by law to keep a record of each dogâs license, so staying current helps keep things running smoothly for everyone. If you havenât already, nowâs the perfect time to prepare, June will be here before you know it.
For your convenience, hereâs a link to Westportâs dog licensing information, including details on new licenses and renewals. If you live in a nearby town, a quick search online should help you find the right info for your area. And of course, if you need a hand, weâre always happy to help!
