Reliability
One parameter stops a rate limit from failing your request.
When a model is rate-limited, down, or refuses on a moderation flag, a single-model request fails and your code has to handle it, and there is a one-parameter fix for that.

How the models array behaves

Priority order, automatic retry
Send models as an array instead of model as a string. OpenRouter tries them in the order you give and moves to the next one on an error, including context-length validation errors, moderation flags, rate limiting, and downtime.

You pay for whichever model served the request
Billing follows the model that actually answered, and the response's model field tells you which one that was.

It sits on top of protection you already have
Within a single model, OpenRouter retries other providers automatically before an error reaches you. The models array is the layer above that, for when every provider for your first choice is exhausted.
On the Anthropic Messages endpoint the same routing is available as fallbacks.
That parameter accepts up to three entries and triggers on the same errors. OpenRouter handles the routing itself rather than passing it upstream.
