Have you ever read a painting?

Not looked at one. Read one. I never had, not once.

A while back in Milan I stopped in front of one, the size of a wall. A crucifixion, hundreds of people, a whole city behind them. I gave it a minute. The label gave me the name, the painter, the date, and nothing about what was going on. I moved on.

Then someone showed me you can actually read one. You count the people. You work out who they are, who paid to be in it, who's allowed to look at whom, what the thing in the corner is doing.

I've never taken an art history class. This felt like the first taste of one, and it blew my mind. So I did it to fifty of the famous ones.

A few things I found, all checked against the museums:

The pearl in Girl with a Pearl Earring is probably glass. The Rijksmuseum said so in 2023.

The Night Watch was trimmed in 1715 to fit a wall. Three people stood in the strip they cut off, and we only know their faces from an old copy.

Van Gogh called The Starry Night a setback and thought the stars were too big. It's on more dorm walls than any painting alive. He filed it under failures.
